Site down. Fixed before we knew.

A client site went down. Monitoring handed it to an AI agent, which found a broken update, rolled it back and fixed the setting behind it. Back within 9 minutes, without the agent ever seeing a server key.

01Why we tried it

We look after client websites and the servers they run on. When a site goes down, most of the time is lost noticing it, finding where it runs and getting in. The fix itself is often small: undo an update, correct a setting. And many problems never take a site down at all: errors that come and go still hurt the people using it.

Handing an AI agent the keys to a server is the obvious shortcut and the obvious risk. A key pasted into a prompt can leak, and an agent with full control can break things faster than a person can stop it.

So we built a secure access layer that never hands over the key, on Desk, the platform we run SEIRO on, and used it on our own servers before any client’s.

02How it works

Step by step.

  1. 01

A continuous, 24/7 monitoring system catches the problem, from a full outage to an error the system recovered from on its own, and opens a task in Desk.

  2. 02

An agent picks up the task. It connects to the server over SSH, the standard way engineers log in, through our secure access layer instead of a key of its own, and starts debugging the way an engineer would.

  3. 03

It reports as it goes. A detailed account of the incident goes back to the task in Desk, and we get an email each time the agent moves to the next step, with a final one when it’s finished or blocked.

  4. 04

If the fix is within set limits, the agent starts it in staging, a test copy of the site, never on the live one.

  5. 05

Once the fix is ready and proven in staging, it deploys automatically if it is within a second set of limits. If not, it waits for a person to approve it.

  6. 06

The agent never sees a password or key. They stay in an encrypted vault, the connection is opened for it, and every action is logged.

03What happened

In the incident, monitoring started the agent on its own. A server setting had let a broken update through. The agent undid the update and changed the setting so it can’t happen again, and the fix passed the same checks we require before any change goes live automatically. We found out from its emails, with the site already back.

04The verdict

What we decided.

Adopted. Every agent at SEIRO reaches a server this way: on our own servers since the end of August 2026, and on the client sites we look after.

For your project

Agents with guarded access work wherever a fix needs hands on a system, without anyone handing over a key. For your systems, that can mean:

  • Website and server maintenance: outages, errors and failed updates fixed inside limits, with a written report.
  • Diagnosis: agents read logs and metrics and propose the fix before anyone logs in.
  • Routine operations: backups checked, certificates renewed, disk space cleared, every step audited.
  • Your own team’s AI tools on the same secure access, so nobody pastes a server key into a prompt.
Limits and guardrails
  • Fixes are tried in staging before they touch the live site.
  • Anything that changes the core of a server (installed software, network, user accounts) waits for a person’s approval.
  • Full control of a server stays with its owner. Agents never get it.
  • Agent connections are short and close on their own.
Next

Bring the same setup to every server we look after, including hosting platforms that need their own connection.

05Questions
Is it safe to let an AI agent into a live server?

Only if it can’t see the keys and can only do what you allow. Ours connects through a secure access layer that keeps passwords and keys away from it, blocks dangerous actions, tries fixes in staging first and asks a person before anything big. Everything it does is logged.

How fast can an AI agent bring a site back?

In our incident, monitoring noticed within 5 minutes and the agent fixed it in 4. The site was back within 9 minutes.

Does the agent fix things without a person?

Small fixes within its limits, yes, once they work in staging. Anything bigger waits for someone on the team to approve it. Either way, the team gets an email at every step and a final one when it’s done or blocked.
